What is this?
A Configuration Item Record records information on a singleconfiguration item (sub product) of a project. It records such information as the history, status, version and variant of each configuration item, and any details of important relationships between them.
A Configuration Item Record should be set up for each product of the project.
The set of Configuration Item Records for a project is often referred to as a configuration library.
Why it’s useful?
This is a PREMIUM template as defined by the PRINCE2 Project Management methodology. Whilst you can find this template in Appendix A of an official PRINCE2 manual, of course you may not have purchased a manual, or you may just prefer to have an electronic version of it.
How to use it?
This is a ‘vanilla’ template that accompanies the PRINCE2 methodology and is used as the basis for PRINCE2 exams. Whilst you can use it in its vanilla format we recommend that you think about tailoring it (as suggested by the method itself) bearing in mind the following:
- Configuration Management Software (if being used)
- Industry / organizational specific terminology
- Size / complexity of project
- If the project is part of a programme
- Any existing templates in your organization
As products produced by a project ‘live on’ beyond the lifecycle of the project, the associated Configuration Item Records / Configuration Library may well have to live on beyond the project too. The need for this will depend upon the compexity of the product(s), what they are and how critical it is that this informtion lives on with the product.
